Unfortunately roofs are often installed without a drip edge or the gutters are installed over top of the drip edge rendering it useless.
Some rain runoff by capillary action runs up under the shingle drip edge and down the fascia behind the gutter.
If not installed properly this will impact the effectiveness of your whole gutter systems.
The other element is if the gutter is not installed behind the drip edge it creates an air gap between the top of the gutter and the bottom of the drip edge which allows a place for the water to go.
