On rabbeted bevel siding leave a 1 8 inch expansion clearance. A jig that holds the current plank so it correctly overlaps the previous plank makes installation easier and faster. The first plank is installed at the bottom of the wall and subsequent planks overlap the previous plank by a minimum of 1 1 4 inches. On bevel siding use a furring strip to bring the bottom edge out the proper distance.

I recently replaced the old weathered aluminum siding on my house with maintenance free vinyl siding. Each succeeding course overlaps the one below. For bevel siding this is a minimum of 1 inch. They have less tendency to warp and swell.
